What Is a Full-Face Helmet?
A full-face helmet covers your entire head and face in one piece, with a fixed chin bar and a flip-down visor — making it the most protective helmet style you can wear.
If safety is your priority, this is the benchmark. The one-piece shell and fixed chin bar protect the parts of your head most likely to hit the ground in a crash, while the sealed visor blocks wind, rain, bugs, and road debris. It's the most versatile choice too — at home on a sportbike, a tourer, or a daily commute.
Benefits of Full-Face Helmets
Full-face helmets give you the most protection, the quietest ride, and the best aerodynamics of any helmet type — which is why they're recommended for every kind of street riding.
- Maximum protection — full chin, face, and head coverage in a single shell.
- Quietest & most aerodynamic — the sealed shape cuts wind noise and buffeting at speed.
- All-weather — the visor seals out rain, wind, cold, and bugs.
- Great ventilation — modern vents flow air without opening you up to the elements.
- Comms-ready — fits a Bluetooth communication system cleanly.
Are Full-Face Helmets the Safest?
Yes — full-face helmets offer the most coverage of any style, including the chin and face, and are consistently rated the safest helmet type. Look for DOT and ECE 22.06 certification.
Because roughly a third of helmet impacts land on the chin area, the fixed chin bar is a big part of why full-face helmets lead on safety. Look for a DOT sticker (U.S. legal minimum) and ideally ECE 22.06, the current international standard, with Snell certification on many sport models.
How to Choose the Right Size
Measure your head about an inch above your eyebrows, match it to the brand's size chart, and choose a snug fit with even pressure and no gaps. Sizes vary by brand, so always check the specific chart.
- Measure right — widest part of the head, level, measured twice; use the larger number.
- Mind your head shape — round, intermediate, or long oval.
- Snug, not painful — the liner breaks in about 15–20%.
- Between sizes? Size down, and fine-tune with cheek pads.
How to Care for a Full-Face Helmet
Clean the shell and visor with mild soap and lukewarm water, hand-wash the removable liner, and keep the visor clear with an anti-fog insert.
- Shell & visor — lukewarm water and a microfiber cloth; avoid harsh chemicals on matte finishes.
- Liner & pads — hand-wash and air dry; refresh with new liners and cheek pads.
- Stay fog-free with a Pinlock or anti-fog insert, and keep a spare visor/shield on hand.
- Lifespan — replace after any impact or about every five years.
Full-Face vs. Modular vs. Open-Face
A full-face is the safest and quietest; a modular trades a little weight and noise for flip-up convenience; an open-face is airier and more classic but leaves your chin and face exposed.
Full-Face Helmet FAQs
Are full-face helmets the safest?
Yes — they offer the most coverage of any helmet type, including the chin and face, and are consistently rated the safest. Look for DOT and ECE 22.06 certification.
Are full-face helmets hot or stuffy?
Modern full-face helmets have intake and exhaust vents that flow a surprising amount of air. A Pinlock insert keeps the visor clear, and cracking the visor at stops adds airflow.
How do I choose the right size?
Measure around the widest part of your head about an inch above your eyebrows, match it to the brand's chart, and pick a snug fit. Between sizes, size down. See our sizing charts.
How long does a full-face helmet last?
Replace it after any crash or impact, and otherwise about every five years, since the protective foam and materials degrade over time.
